From today’s Wash Post, required reading on the dangers associated with gathering together or how one minimally symptomatic person attending a funeral and a birthday party led to twelve Covid-19 infections and three deaths. Plus undoubtedly many others who have not yet been traced.
Person A1 attended a pre-funeral dinner with the family and then the funeral where he hugged several people in condolence. Two people from the dinner and one from the funeral became ill with confirmed or presumed Covid. One of the people from the dinner was hospitalized, deteriorated, was put a ventilator but died. Somehow, another person visited the hospitalized person without PPE. She developed Covid-19
Three days later, person A1 still only has minimal symptoms. He attends a birthday party with nine other people. Seven become infected within a few days. Five experienced mild symptoms with a low-grade fever but two were hospitalized, put on ventilators but died.
Three of the five birthday attendees who had minimal symptoms attended church services. Another church attendee who sat within one row of them and passed them the offering plate also developed symptoms.
Time after time, gatherings are the nidus for spread. A funeral in Albany, Georgia, a business meeting in Singapore, an Italian soccer game.
Let’s all not gather for a while. Most importantly, not gather in groups of any size. The birthday party above had only ten people, yet seven became infected and two died. The risk is just too high.
Practice safe living.
We all thank each other for that.
