Last night CBS’s 60 Minutes aired a show titled, “A Harvard geneticist’s goal: to protect humans from viruses, genetic diseases, and aging.” The link will take you to both the video and a transcript of the show.
The show features George Church, who has worked in a Harvard genetics lab for 45 years. He holds 50 patents and has written over 500 scientific papers. He knows of what he speaks.
His work covers a plethora of genetic topics from growing pig organs without pig viruses (all the better to transplant them to humans), to growing individual human cells into organ-specific cells for eventual organ replacement, and gene therapies to reverse the physiologic effects of aging to decrease the effects of aging and improve a healthier old age.
Experiments using these genetic therapies are already underway in dogs. I’ll follow along and report back as the science progresses.
